Card-funded fund investing (tsumitate) — buying funds monthly with a credit card — earns points on rules that differ by card and depend on your yearly card spend or, now, on the same month's other spending. From purchases in October 2026, the Monex Card also moved to a table where the rate depends on your other card spending and the size of your investing. Here is how many points a year you get from ¥30,000, ¥50,000 and ¥100,000 a month, from the issuers' own tables.
How each card's rate works (the issuers' tables)
- Rakuten Card (Rakuten Securities): 0.5% with no condition. Gold 0.75%, Premium 1%, Black 2% (updated 24 September 2026). Funds whose distributor fee is 0.4% a year or more earn 1–2%.
- Sumitomo Mitsui Card (NL) (SBI Securities): 0.5%, but only in years when the previous year's card spend was at least ¥100,000 (0% below that; the first year has no condition, once per card).
- Sumitomo Mitsui Card Gold (NL): 1.0% if the previous year's card spend was ¥1M or more, 0.75% at ¥100,000 or more, 0% below that.
- Platinum Preferred: 1% every month, plus 1% once a year at ¥3M of yearly card spend and 2% at ¥5M — so 2% and 3%.
- Monex Card (from October 2026 purchases): if your other card spending that month is at least ¥50,000, investing of up to ¥50,000 earns 1.1%, over ¥50,000 and up to ¥70,000 earns 0.6%, and over ¥70,000 up to ¥100,000 earns 0.2%. If other spending is ¥10,000 to under ¥50,000, the rates are 0.55%, 0.3% and 0.1%. The table has no row for under ¥10,000.
For Sumitomo Mitsui, the investing itself does not count toward yearly card spend, and neither do mobile Suica top-ups or passes. Opening a card only to invest therefore may not meet the spend condition.
Yearly points by monthly investing amount
1 point = ¥1. The Sumitomo Mitsui rows assume the condition on that card's own yearly spend (not counting the investing) is met; the Monex Card row assumes ¥50,000 or more of other spending that month.
| Card and condition | ¥30,000 a month | ¥50,000 a month | ¥100,000 a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rakuten Card (no condition) | ¥1,800 | ¥3,000 | ¥6,000 |
| Sumitomo Mitsui (NL) (previous-year spend ¥100,000+) | ¥1,800 | ¥3,000 | ¥6,000 |
| Gold (NL) (previous-year spend ¥1M+) | ¥3,600 | ¥6,000 | ¥12,000 |
| Platinum Preferred (yearly spend ¥3M+) | ¥7,200 | ¥12,000 | ¥24,000 |
| Platinum Preferred (yearly spend ¥5M+) | ¥10,800 | ¥18,000 | ¥36,000 |
| Monex Card (¥50,000+ of other spend that month) | ¥3,960 | ¥6,600 | ¥2,400 |
The Monex table has a cliff. At up to ¥50,000 the rate is 1.1%, but just over ¥50,000 it drops to 0.6%, so investing ¥60,000 a month earns ¥4,320 a year, less than ¥50,000 a month (¥6,600). At ¥100,000 a month it earns only ¥2,400. On the table's own terms, the larger your monthly investing, the worse the Monex Card is.
How to choose
- If you invest ¥50,000 a month or less through Monex Securities and also spend at least ¥50,000 a month on the same Monex Card: the Monex Card at ¥6,600 a year (¥50,000 a month) is the best among cards without an annual fee. Platinum Preferred would earn ¥18,000 at ¥5M of yearly spend, but it costs ¥33,000 a year.
- If you invest ¥100,000 a month through SBI Securities: at ¥5M or more of yearly card spend, Platinum Preferred's ¥36,000 (before the ¥33,000 fee); at ¥1M or more, Gold (NL)'s ¥12,000 (the fee is free at ¥1M); otherwise Rakuten Card (Rakuten Securities) or NL at ¥6,000.
- Investing points are heavily affected by fee and spend conditions, so it pays to decide where your other spending goes together with the investing card. The card-combination calculator does this with your investing amount.
To see what the investing itself grows to, use the new NISA calculator. The points are worth 0.5%–3% of the amount invested a year — not small next to a fund's running cost. The verdict list is in Credit card verdicts.
